A leather motorcycle jacket differs from an ordinary leather coat in two ways that matter: the hide is thick enough to resist abrasion in a slide, and the seams are stitched to hold under load. A fashion jacket in thin lambskin has neither.

Types of Motorcycle Jacket

Armour on Race and Suit Jackets

Race jackets and two piece suit jackets carry CE Level 2 armour at the shoulders and elbows to EN 1621-1:2012, with a back protector pocket taking a CE Level 2 protector to EN 1621-2:2014. The armour is KeepTech, independently tested and certified by Ricotest, European Notified Body No. 0498, Pastrengo, Italy, under EU Regulation 2016/425 as Category II PPE, CE and UKCA marked. Level 2 transmits about 20 kN in the standard impact test against roughly 35 kN for Level 1.

The armour is independently CE certified; the leather shell is not certified as a garment. Heritage and cafe racer jackets in this collection are supplied without armour — they are leather outerwear, and should not be treated as protective riding gear.

Leather

Full-grain cowhide throughout — the dense outer layer of the hide that abrades slowly rather than tearing. Split, bonded and PU-coated leather is never used, whatever it is labelled elsewhere. Main seams are triple stitched with high-strength bonded nylon thread. Colours include black, brown and distressed finishes, with full custom combinations available and leather patchwork logos rather than print.

Men's and Women's Fit

How should a leather motorcycle jacket fit?

Snug through the shoulders and chest with no loose material, so that on an armoured jacket the protectors stay over the joint. Sleeves should reach the wrist bone with arms extended in a riding position, not standing straight. Full-grain leather relaxes and moulds to you over the first few rides.

Is cowhide or lambskin better for a motorcycle jacket?

Cowhide, for riding. Lambskin is softer and lighter but much thinner and offers little abrasion resistance. Lambskin belongs on a fashion jacket, not a riding jacket.
